Call for Applications: Department Lead - Competence by Design, Department of Medicine

The Department of Medicine, Faculty of Medicine, at the University of Toronto is seeking applicants for the position of Department Lead - Competence by Design. Competence By Design (CBD) is an outcomes-based postgraduate medical education initiative being implemented throughout Canada starting in July 2017 that emphasizes the achievement of educational “milestones” subsumed under subspecialty-specific "entrustable professional activities" (EPAs) over the traditional time-in track framework of residency education that is characteristic of more traditional educational models. The Department of Medicine offers some of the premier training programs in Medicine in Canada alongside faculty members who are national and international leaders in education and research. Applicants must be eligible for a full-time clinical academic appointment at the University of Toronto. Preference will be given to applicants at the rank of Associate or Full Professor. The term of the Department Lead – Competence by Design appointment is five years with the possibility of one renewal following a successful review. Effective start date is March 1, 2019, or an alternative date as mutually agreed on.

The of Department Lead – Competence by Design is a leadership position, highly valued and pivotal to the overall educational success of the Department. The of Department Lead – Competence by Design will be responsible for the planning and implementation of the CBD initiatives within each division program and in the Department of Medicine overall.  This position will involve extensive logistical coordination between individual divisions, the Department of Medicine, the University of Toronto’s Office of Postgraduate Medical Education, and the Royal College, as well as curriculum design and innovation, and assessment planning, design and oversight. The of Department Lead – Competence by Design is supported by individual program directors (situated at each of our major teaching sites), as well as a number of other faculty leads.  The Department Lead – Competence by Design reports directly to the Vice-Chair, Education or their designate. The Department Lead – Competence by Design is also accountable to the Associate Dean, Postgraduate Medical Education.

The ideal candidate is a respected clinical teacher and innovative leader with well-developed interpersonal and communication skills with an interest in education scholarship. A background in CBD planning on a local and/or national level, and a solid record of accomplishment of scholarship and innovation would be a strong asset.

Applicants must hold be a RCPSC Specialist or be eligible for certification in the RCPSC and licensure in Ontario.
