These past few weeks I have been reflecting on education with a new lens, both as a mother and as program director (PD). I have been touring school open houses looking for a good home for my soon-to-turn four-year-old daughter. She is embarking on her first steps in the education system. At the same time, the program has been busy preparing for CaRMS.  In my new position as PD, the considerations and decisions surrounding CaRMS take on a different meaning and weight. I am awestruck at the incredible pool of EM applicants and had the pleasure of meeting the shortlist of stellar candidates that have been touring Canadian EM residencies in search of a good home for their next five years. As I reflect on my daughter’s first steps and on the candidates’ journeys seeking a career in EM, past, present and future, I am struck by the learners’ enthusiasm and curiosity, the enormous priviledge that we have all been granted in working in our amazing specialty in the Canadian healthcare system, and the great company I am in.

CaRMS 2017 was a great success! Big thanks to Nima Heirat, Sawan Massey, our file reviewers and interviewers, the faculty who attended the CaRMS social, our amazing residents (the candidates would not stop raving about you!), and the EMRTC’s leadership in making this year a great success. Looking forward to many more.
