Teaching Evaluation Scores

Teaching effectiveness scores (TES) for the Department of Medicine are captured and maintained within two systems, namely the Postgraduate Web Registration (POWER) for resident teaching and the Medical Student Information System (MedSIS) for MD program teaching.  

POWER Evaluations for Resident Teaching

Within POWER, teachers can view their teaching effectiveness scores at quarterly intervals for one week periods for the current academic session and at any time for past academic sessions. A minimum of three completed teaching evaluations are required before teachers can view their reports. 

During the current academic session (2016-2017), viewing periods are as follows:

Weekly Viewing Period 2016/17      
1st quarter - September rotation September 9 - 23, 2016    
2nd quarter - January rotation January 9 - 13, 2017    
3rd quater - April rotation April 3 - 7, 2017    

Note – You will be able to access your Teacher Effectiveness Score at 12PM on the first day of the viewing period.

  1. Log in to POWER.
  2. Enter your PIN/Password. Forgotten PIN/Passwords can be recovered using the link on the POWER login page.
  3. On the blue menu, click ‘Effectiveness Scores’.
  4. Select the academic year you wish to view using the 'Training Session' filter.  If there are less than three evaluations, a message indicating that there are too few completed evaluations will display.
  5. For assistance with using the system, contact the POWER help desk .

In early July, evaluations are available for viewing for the previous session. Teachers can view all TES for years preceding the current session at any time provided that three or more teaching evaluations have been submitted for the session. Academic years are selected using the 'Training Session' filter on the POWER system.

MedSIS Evaluations for MD Program Teaching

Within MedSIS, teachers can view their teaching effectiveness scores (TES) for previous academic years anytime. Final TES for year one and two or preclerkship courses are available in September, whereas clerkship courses are published mid-November. A minimum of three completed teaching evaluations are required in any one course before a report is published for a teacher. 

To view an MD Program course Teacher Effectiveness Score:

  1. Log in to MedSIS.
  2. Enter your PIN/Password. Note: Forgotten or never before used PIN/Passwords can be recovered using the link “Forgot your password?” Enter your email into the address field and click “Submit”. You will be email your PIN and password.
  3. Go to TES Score on the blue, left hand menu.
  4. Select session (academic year), course ([code] title) and evaluation form from the drop-down lists
  5. If there is a published TES report available for the selected criteria, the report will appear.
  6. For assistance with using the system, contact MedSIS.

Appeals

Postgraduate Evaluations

The department uses a formal appeals process for hearing teachers’ concerns about their own evaluations. Teachers who wish to make an appeal should forward a written request and rationale to the Department Research & Evaluation Officer. An Appeals Review Committee convenes and adjudicates twice annually regarding submitted appeal requests. Teachers are notified of the outcome of the investigation and appeals review. Under no circumstances should faculty attempt to contact learners who they believe may have provided a teaching evaluation that they wish to challenge.  Appeals of scores will be handled exclusively through the appeals committee.

In the case of appeals being upheld, the challenged or questionable evaluations are suspended within the POWER system, effectively correcting the affected teachers’ summary reports.  These amendments are usually completed within 24 hours following rulings from the Appeals Committee.
 
In the case of appeal requests being denied, appellants will also be duly informed as to the outcome.  However, an additional notice of the unsuccessful appeal will be remitted for inclusion in the teacher’s faculty file.

MedSIS Evaluations
